This may be graphic or sad to sensitive readers4:05pm, Monday, February 21, 2011 - Joel and I took Sable and our beautiful niece Emma (12 years old) to Five Guys Burgers to have a quick bite when my belly was stuck with a sharp pain. It was so intense that I could barely stand. I asked Joel to get the girls to the car as I started walking there slowly. I was in a lot of pain.
4:13 - From the car, Joel called my doctors office and described our situation. The doctors office said "Go to the E.R." The pain was getting worse.
Emma and Sable were dropped off at our house to wait for grandma who arrived about 20 minutes later to see the girls sitting on the living room floor, playing and giggling. It was Emma's first real time babysitting and she did a great job.
Joel and I went to the ER at Northwest Hospital. By the time we got there, my legs and hands were numb and the pain, on a scale of 1 to 10, was at a 10! I couldn't stand or walk so Joel grabbed a nurse and a wheel chair to get me into the waiting room.
Hugging my abdomen and sobbing, we waited. We waited a long time. Joel sat close rubbing my shoulders and hugging my head to him, sitting in my wheelchair, in pain. I overheard a man being called in to see a doctor ask if "The woman in pain can go first..." It was my first sense of relief. It was shocking to me, what a kind man. The doctor said patients go in the order that they arrived, so we continued to wait. The triage nurse called us in to get some basic information and when the blood pressure cuff didn't work for the second time she told me to "relax!". I was shaking to hard from the pain. Annoyed with us, she sent us back into the waiting room to wait some more.
I've had miscarriages in the past and they never hurt this bad. I felt like I was in full labor without the one minute break between contractions to catch my breath.
5:40pm - We are called into a room, I'm given a gown and Joel hoisted onto a hospital bed, still crying, shaking and in as much pain as when I started, almost 2 hours ago. The nurses get started with questions, drawing blood and vitals. I meet my doctor who checked me out and ordered some painkillers for me.
6:10pm - Pain killers are pumped into my IV and I smile at Joel. The Doctor, who I really liked, orders all kinds of tests done including an Ultrasound.
The Ultrasound tech couldn't tell us anything while she was doing her scans but Joel did see a little round shape in there with a beating heart. Our baby was alive, the rest was a blur. I had one more small dose of medication and held Joels hand while the doctor was reviewing all the tests. I needed him to keep scrating my nose; the pain medication made it tingle and I had IV's in both arms which made it uncomfortable to bend at the elbows.
8:50pm - The doctor comes in with a file and says "I have some bad news for you."
"We're expecting bad news" I said.
She Tells us that the pregnancy is Ectopic, that my left fallopian tube is ruptured and I am bleeding into my belly. That's where the pain is coming from. Also there is no way to save the baby and I will be having surgery an about an hour. I held it together for almost 5 minutes. When all the nurses left Joel and I in the room for a while, I just sobbed into his chest.
Sable stayed with Grandma Jackie and Grandpa Keith overnight and had plenty to do with her cousin Emma. Keith took care of our Pugs and grabbed clothes for Sable from our house. During the whole painful ordeal at the hospital, I kept thinking of our Sable, playing at grandma's house, sweet, happy, safe and loved.
10:00pm - Joel kissed me on the forehead and I was wheeled into surgery. I knew everyones name that was in the room with me and was able to chat with them before hand. I was knocked out and woke up over an hour later in a room with two very sweet nurses who kept putting more and more blankets on me to keep me warm.

12:30am - They wheeled me to my post-op room where Joel was waiting for me, smiling. The doctor had talked with him and said everything went great, though my left fallopian tube was completely inflamed and had to be removed.
I was released from the hospital at 1:00 Tuesday. It was snowing. I feel like I've been punched in the gut and I have 3 new scars, but I think I'm alright. My husband was an amazing help. I instantly felt better when we picked up Sable from Grandma's house.
